Pain Behind the Eyes

Dental Center for TMJ and Facial Pain

TMJ dysfunction can cause hyperactivity of the chewing muscles. There is a muscle that attaches to the jaw on one end, and the back of the eye socket on the other end. This muscle is called the Spenomandibularis muscle. If there is hyperactivity in this muscle, the pain can be referred to the area at the back of the eye. Many patients will characterize this pain as headache pain.
